SEQUITUR VINEYARD
This vineyard, hidden amidst the trees on the Ribbon Ridge AVA, was planted on Marine Sedimentary soils in 2012 and 2013 by Beaux Freres founder, Mike Etzel and his wife, Carey Critchlow. At 425 feet elevation, the site is contiguous to Beaux Freres’s Upper Terrace and hosts a list of unique clones: Chalone, Mt. Eden, Rochioli, Musigny, Pommard, Wadensvil, 667, 777, 943, M100….
We feel honored to have been offered this fruit by Mike and Carey because outside of the Etzel family projects, only Walter Scott and Hundred Suns receive fruit from this extraordinary site. More importantly, after Grant’s 9 years at Beaux Freres, Mike and Carey feel like family to us, and we love to stay connected to them through this vineyard.
LONE FEATHER VINEYARD
This special, largely own-rooted vineyard (known formerly as Bass Hill) was planted in 1989 and sits perched on a steep hillside in the McMinnville AVA. The old Pommard and Wädenswil vines sit atop a rocky, well-drained volcanic soils (Jory-Bellpine & Gellatly-Dixonville). Windy maritime influences create small berries and thick skins which result in wines of intensity, structure, and high natural acidity. It is now owned and farmed by Warren and Jennifer Feather, who fell in love with this site for its history and are committed to farming organically to preserve the life of these cherished vines. In addition to the old vine pinot noir, the Feathers planted two acres of Chardonnay which we are also lucky enough to work with.
CARSON PHILLIPS VINEYARD
We first met Grant Phillips during our early days at a shared custom crush facility. At the time, he and his family had recently taken the helm of their 40-acre estate, located in a serene, fir-lined pocket of the Dundee Hills. Planted in 2000, the vineyard has since come into its prime, with vines deeply rooted in the region’s iconic, iron-rich Jory volcanic soils.
Grant’s approach is defined by a rare level of precision; he manages the land organically and relies entirely on dry-farming to encourage the purest expression of the site. We are honored to work with Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, and Chardonnay from these mature vines, which consistently deliver the hallmark elegance and mineral tension of the Dundee Hills.
BEDNARIK VINEYARD
The Bednarik Vineyard sits on a majestic hillside in the cool foothills of the Coast Range, just outside Cherry Grove. This six-acre site was planted in 1988 by William Bednarik, featuring own-rooted Pommard and Wädenswil clones at an elevation of 350 feet with an ideal south/southwest exposure.
When Grant’s friends, the Mora brothers, took over the site in 2016, they invited him to walk the rows. Grant immediately recognized the vineyard's extraordinary potential: the old-growth vines and perfect aspect offered a cooler microclimate—a vital balance against increasingly warm vintages. Now farmed organically, these 35 + year-old vines provide the structural foundation and elegant acidity that have made Bednarik a cornerstone of the Hundred Suns portfolio.
BREAKER VINEYARD
In the summer of 2018 we bought a perfect house in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA sitting atop Walnut Hill Road and surrounded by this 4 acre vineyard. On the hillside, this site was known as “the Old Vines,” but to our kids it is their new backyard.
First planted in 1972 by Richard Zielinski our vineyard sits at 545-590 feet with a slight southeast exposure. The vineyard soils are formed from weathered basalt. To the north the soils are predominantly Nekia, moderately deep silty clay soils laying on a layer of basalt bedrock. The southern portion is predominantly Gelderman soil series which has much thinner topsoils with rocks and cobbles strewn throughout the rows. The western half of the vineyard was originally planted to Draper clone Chardonnay but later grafted to 777 clone of Pinot Noir and the eastern half to the Pommard clone of Pinot Noir - all original roots. In March 2020, we began the process of removing these vines to restore health to the vineyard, and new vines are now in the ground. We can’t wait for these vines to reach full maturity.
